Czech & Slovak American Archival Consortium (CSAAC)

AIMS and OBJECTIVES

The overall aim of the Consortium has been given by the very reasons that led to convening in November 2003 in Washington, DC, a special Working Conference on Czech & Slovak American Archival Materials, i.e., a genuine concern for the preservation of these materials for the future.

Specific objectives include:

1. to provide platform and forum for communication and discussion of issues among the Consortium members;
2. to establish working linkages ad encourage cooperation among the archives at universities and public libraries and other relevant institutions maintained or supported by government or private sector;
3. to establish an information system to help the archivists and the scholars, as well as the donors, about the availability of the existing archives and their inventories and the policies of the relevant archival institutions;
4. to assist with the surveying of Czech and Slovak American archival materials kept in private hands;
5. to publicize the need to preserve the relevant materials among the ethnic organizations and other potential donors and to foster the efforts leading to their eventual transfer to a suitable repository;
6. to assist with collection development and acquisition, including the efforts to prevent needless duplication and scattering of the same or similar archival materials at different repositories;
7. to assist with collection description and assessment, and with the preservation and with the preparation of suitable guidelines and setting the standards;
8. to assist with publishing information about the archival materials;
9. to sponsor conferences and workshops;
10. to develop a joint digitalized database.
