The overall aim of the Consortium has been given by the very reasons that led to convening in November 2003 in Washington, DC, a special Working
Conference on Czech & Slovak American Archival Materials, i.e., a genuine concern for the preservation of these materials for the future.
Specific objectives include:
1. to provide platform and forum for communication and discussion of issues
among the Consortium members;
2. to establish working linkages ad encourage cooperation among the archives
at universities and public libraries and other relevant institutions
maintained or supported by government or private sector;
3. to establish an information system to help the archivists and the
scholars, as well as the donors, about the availability of the existing archives and
their inventories and the policies of the relevant archival institutions;
4. to assist with the surveying of Czech and Slovak American archival
materials kept in private hands;
5. to publicize the need to preserve the relevant materials among the ethnic
organizations and other potential donors and to foster the efforts leading to
their eventual transfer to a suitable repository;
6. to assist with collection development and acquisition, including the
efforts to prevent needless duplication and scattering of the same or similar
archival materials at different repositories;
7. to assist with collection description and assessment, and with the
preservation and with the preparation of suitable guidelines and setting the
standards;
8. to assist with publishing information about the archival materials;
9. to sponsor conferences and workshops;
10. to develop a joint digitalized database.
