Czech American Bibliography

SVU is pleased to announce it just issued the Czech American Bibliography, published, under SVU auspices, by AuthorHouse. The book, with the foreword by SVU President Karel Raška, has been authored by Mila Rechcigl, ‘SVU Scholar in Residence’. It is a comprehensive bibliography of publications relating to Czechs in America, from the earliest time since the discovery of the New World to date, covering their settlement, community life and their contributions to their host country. Although emphasis is on English titles, including books, as well as articles, the relevant titles in Czech language have also been included, particularly in those areas where there is a paucity of English titles. It also incorporates and updates the relevant publications in the classical Esther Jerabek’s bibliography on Czechs and Slovaks in North America (1976). …read more

Czech American Timeline

Our never-tiring ‘SVU-Scholar-In- Residence’ Mila Rechcigl has undertaken – under the SVU auspices – another significant first, i.e., Czech American Timeline. Chronology of Milestones in the History of Czechs in America with the focus on accomplishments of American personalities with roots in the Czech Lands, from the times of the discovery of the New World to date. Although he has the study well in hand, he encourages the SVU members, and other readers of this note, to submit, for consideration, suggestions of significant events in the life of Czech immigrants and their descendants in America, which he may have missed. Please send your suggestions via e-mail to svu.one@gmail.com

SVU voted for preservation of the CSPS Sokol Hall in Minnesota

CSPS Sokol Hall in St.Paul, MN, the oldest Czech-Slovak Sokol Hall in the USA, is about to receive the AMEX Grant within the Partners in Preservation project.

American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced that the CSPS Sokol Hall is a finalist with 25 historic sites for part of a $1 million grant.

Preliminatry results of the public vote on Facebook show the CSPS Sokol Hall got on the 3rd position of the 25, with some 9% share of the grant allocation.

The current project will improve the second floor theater, including making the stage accessible, and upgrading the audio, projection, mechanical and theater systems to meet modern performance standards and renovation of the historic stage and antique backdrops. Support our collection of over 200 community plays published in Czech in Prague between 1880 and 1930. All for our hall’s 125th anniversary next year Summer 2012!
