The Story of the Cleveland Czechoslovak Legionnaires

Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery will meet on Sunday, January 24, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. for a presentation by Dr. Steven Sebesta, President of the Cleveland Chapter of SVU. Dr. Sebesta will speak on “The Story of the Cleveland Czechoslovak Legionnaires” at Klas Restaurant, 5734 W. Cermak Avenue in Cicero, IL. The Czech luncheon will be $25. Reservations need to be made no later than January 20th by calling 630-887-0411. For more information, call 847-362-9036.
A booklet about the 30 Legionnaires at rest at Bohemian National Cemetery will be available, and Dr. Sebesta will bring copies of his new book which he will sign if desired.

SVU Member Petr Sis Honored

SVU member, Petr Sis, Czech author and illustrator of children’s books, received the Sibert Medal and the Caldecott Medal from the American Library Association (ALA) for his latest book The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain. The Wall previously won the New York Times’s Best Illustrated Book award and other prizes after it was issued in the USA last September. …read more

Jan Svejnar (born in 1952) is a US-based, Czech-born economist. An adviser to former Czech president Vaclav Havel for almost a decade, Professor Svejnar is the Director of the International Policy Center at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, the Everett E. Berg Professor of Business Administration, and Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan.

SVU Member Jiri Stejskal Becomes President of ATA

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The American Translators Association (ATA) announced that Jiri Stejskal will take over as president for a two-year term. The ATA is the nation’s largest professional organization for translators and interpreters with over 10,400 members from 80 countries.

Jiri Stejskal is the founder and president of CETRA, Inc., a language services provider based in the Philadelphia area. Stejskal earned both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pennsylvania, an Executive MBA degree at Temple University, and has more than 20 years of experience as a translator. He has also taught undergraduate and graduate language courses at the University of Pennsylvania since 1990.
