RESOLUTION

AN ASSERTION OF THE NEED TO INTENSIFY THE PURSUIT OF FREE INQUIRY
AND EXCHANGE OF IDEAS

PREAMBLE

The Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences in America, Inc. (the Society), a nonpartisan, nonprofit, cultural organization, is dedicated to the principles of free search for truth and knowledge, free contacts among peoples and free dissemination of ideas. The Society associates scientists, scholars, artists, and writers throughout the world who, either because of their national origin or because of their particular interests and calling, pursue activities related to Czechoslovakia, her peoples and their contribution to the world culture.

RESOLUTION

Assembled in Washington, D.C. in commemoration of the Bicentennial Anniversary of the American Revolution, the members of the Society
- greatly cherishing their status as free men;   
- proudly affirming their allegiance to the fundamental rights invested in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution;   
- sincerely joining in the celebration of the American Revolution;   
- gratefully remembering the role of the American people in establishing a free and democratic Czechoslovakia;   
- deservingly pointing out the contribution of Czechs and Slovaks to American and world culture;   
- unwaveringly pledging their travail and endeavors to the cause of freedom and human dignity.

HAVE RESOLVED   

TO REAFFIRM their faith in the free search for truth and individual happiness as the fundamental basis of any political system preserving the dignity of man;
TO EXPRESS their deep concern over the loss of freedom of assembly, inquiry and expression in Czechoslovakia and other countries of the world;   
TO WELCOME the efforts of Czech and Slovak artists and scientists, dedicated to the principles of intellectual and creative freedom, who in the present difficult conditions in Czechoslovakia strive to fulfill their mission so important for all nations;
TO URGE all scientists, scholars, artists and writers throughout the world to ask and work for reestablishing of these fundamental rights in Czechoslovakia as well as elsewhere in the world;
TO CALL on all men of good will to join them and work together for application of the principles enunciated in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and upholding universal belief in the worth and dignity of each human being.
