External Grant Assistance
Institution:
Documentation Center for the Promotion of Independent Czechoslovak Literature, Scheinfeld,
Germany.
Purpose: To assist scholars and writers in Czechoslovakia engaged in
independent creative activity.
Institution: John Hus Education Foundation, London, England.
Purpose: To facilitate the free flow of information to and within
Czechoslovakia.
Specific objectives include:
a) the establishment of an independent evening university in Prague;
b) support of a communications system between independent groups in Czechoslovakia, Poland
and Hungary.
Institution: Support Group in the West for the Jazz Section, a unit of
the Czechoslovak Musicians' Union.
Purpose:
a) To advise the Jazz Section on legal issues;
b) provide moral support and material assistance;
c) publish the Jazz Section's bulletin for distribution in Czechoslovakia.
Institution: Jan Palach Information and Research Trust, London, England.
Purpose: To assist independent intellectual, educational, and cultural
activities in Czechoslovakia.
Institution: Sixty-Eight Publishers, Toronto, Canada.
Purpose: To assist in publishing selected books.
Institution: Rozmluvy (Surrey, England), a Czech language journal of
political and cultural ideas.
Purpose: To partially cover the cost of publishing and distribution to
Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland.
Institution: Paternoster (Vienna, Austria), a Czech language literary
journal.
Purpose: To assist in publication and circulation inside Czechoslovakia.
Institution: SVU
Purpose: To produce and distribute in Czechoslovakia a series of video
round-table discussions with prominent Czech and Slovak emigres on subjects of importance
to the people of Czechoslovakia with emphasis on the country's democratic traditions and
Western culture orientation.

Most of these activities have been supported by grants awarded to SVU by
the National Endowment for Democracy, Inc.
