NEW SVU PUBLICATION:  ON  ALL  FRONTS

The third and final volume in the series ON ALL FRONTS: CZECHOSLOVAKS IN WORLD WAR II, editor, Lewis M. White, was published in July 2000. The book consists of eyewitness accounts of Czechoslovaks who fought with the Allies in World War II for a free and democratic Czechoslovakia. It is now 55 years since the end of the war and a true account in English of Czechoslovak participation in the War had not been published before we began our series. The former Communist regime in Czechoslovakia would not permit anyone to publish an account favorable to the West. Now it is possible and many of those who still have vivid memories of their participation believe they owe it to posterity to give them an account of their experiences. They are:
Herbert Nemec, Pavel Babe, Mills Casper, Marcela Ludikar, Frantisek Fajtl, Miloslav Maly, Radomir Luza, Arnost Heidrich, Ivan Prochazka, Vaclav Modrak, Josef Kulich, Vaclav Beran, General Jan Studlar, Michal Kodris, Rostislav Hlavacek, Tomas Sedlacek, Milos Knorr, Josef Kozera, Zdenek Kordina, Bohuslav Velvarsky, Frantisek Zak, Alois Seda, Gustav Svoboda, Pravomil Raichl, and Antonin Petrak.

This volume goes beyond their experiences in the War to the fate that awaited the fighters for a free and democratic Czechoslovakia when a Communist Regime took over their country for more than forty years. They literally fought on all fronts: CAMPAIGN IN FRANCE, BATTLE OF BRITAIN, MIDDLE EAST, FAR EAST, NORTH AFRICA, ALLIED INVASION OF EUROPE, EASTERN FRONT, INTERNAL RESISTANCE, SLOVAK NATIONAL UPRISING,  and PRAGUE UPRISING. Many of these fighters were jailed by the Communist Regime of Czechoslovakia or forced into exile and they and their families were persecuted in various ways because of their democratic views. History has vindicated these heroes and the democratic regimes of the Czech and Slovak Republics now honor them as those who contributed the most in the triumph of democracy.

The book is a hardback. It has 306 pages with illustrations. It is being sold by the Washington Chapter of the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences, which financed its publication. The cost of the book is $20, plus $2 for shipping within the United States and  $5 for shipping to Canada. Dagmar White is handling the sale of the books. You can write to her at 9751 Firth Court, Vienna, VA 22181. Tel/Fax: 703-281-2570. Checks should be made out to SVU Washington DC.
