Jiří Kárnet (1920-2011)
Shortly after his 91st birthday, Jiří Kárnet passed away in New York on Feb 1, 2011. Czech playwright, reviewer, stage director, journalist, essayist, poet, and translator. Jiří Kárnet, born in Hořice, was a close friend of Jiří Voskovec, Emil F. Burian, Alfréd Radok, Emil Radok, Jan Grossman, Egon Hostovský, Ferdinand Peroutka, and Pavel Tigrid.
After 1948, he worked at Radio France Internationale (RFI) in Paris for nearly five years.
In 1952, he moved to New York where he worked for Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe (RFE). Together with Pavel Tigrid, he was at the birth of Svědectví, a quarterly for politics and culture, where he served on its editorial board in 1956-1962.
