Infections and epidemics were out of control, ancientbeliefs and superstition prevailed; the transportation and exchange of information were minimal. Blood letting, purgatives, emetics and blistering further increased the rate of mortality in the seriously ill. Wounds usually became infected, amputations were done without anesthesia.
