With J\u00c3\u00a1n Budaj, J\u00c3\u00a1n \u00c4\u0152arnogursk\u00c3\u00bd, Michal Hvoreck\u00c3\u00bd, Milan K\u00c5\u02c6a\u00c5\u00beko, Franti\u00c5\u00a1ek Miklo\u00c5\u00a1ko, Ladislav Snopko, Peter \u00c5\u00a0\u00c5\u00a5astn\u00c3\u00bd, Magda V\u00c3\u00a1\u00c5\u00a1\u00c3\u00a1ryov\u00c3\u00a1. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Candle Demonstration (Svie\u00c4\u008dkov\u00c3\u00a1 Manifestacia )<\/strong>, dir Ondrej Krajnak, 2008, 26 minutes<br \/>\nA peaceful demonstration for religious freedom in 1988 at the Hviezdoslav Square in Bratislava brutally suppressed by the police and thesecret service. The film  includes recordings by the State Security\u00c2\u00b4s secret camera. Secret police agents are identified. Interviews with the protagonists of this historic demonstration recorded twenty years later include  Peter Bohunick\u00c3\u00bd, J\u00c3\u00a1n \u00c4\u0152arnogursk\u00c3\u00bd and \u00c4\u00bdudmila Heribanov\u00c3\u00a1.<\/p>\n<p>Films are produced by the Nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Memory Institute in Slovakia. In Slovak with English subtitles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gabriel Ariel Levicky<\/strong>, writer, translator, poet and cartoonist, was born in Slovakia. In August 1968, he participated in the anti-Soviet invasion protests in Bratislava and left the country soon after for Israel. After returning to Czechoslovakia a year later, he was involved in the underground movement and  became the subject of secret police harassment, especially after signing Charter 77. In 1979 he left Czechoslovakia again, first to San Francisco and then to New York City.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Nation&#8217;s Memory Institute \/ \u00c3\u0161stav pam\u00c3\u00a4ti n\u00c3\u00a1roda (\u00c3\u0161PN)<\/strong> is a public organization founded in 2002 by the Slovak Parliament for the purpose of investigation, analysis and disclosure of documents  from the dark period of Slovak fascism to Soviet style communism in Slovakia 1939-1989. \u00c3\u0161PN holds a vast reference archive open to public scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences in New York (SVU-NY).<br \/>\nIn cooperation with the Nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Memory Institute (\u00c3\u0161stav  pam\u00c3\u00a4ti naroda) in Bratislava and the Consulate General of the Slovak Republic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.svu2000.org\/newyork\/wp-content\/Slovak-Velvet-Flyer-4-e1413651798186.jpg\" alt=\"Slovak velvet Flyer\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A special screening of two Slovak documentary films depicting 1988-1989 events in Slovakia.
