Fifty Years of SVU

Fifty years of SVU - coverOn the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU), the Society has published an extraordinary memoir by one of the Society’s founders and President for many years Dr. Miloslav Rechcigl. The book bears a title On Behalf of Their Homeland: Fifty Years of SVU.

An Eyewitness Account of the History of the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) was published by East European Monographs, Boulder, CO and is being distributed by Columbia University Press, New York.

In this monumental monograph of some 700 pages, illustrated with numerous photographs, the Society is depicted not from the perspective of an outside witness but from an insider and an active participant, frequently in the leading role. The author, Dr. Rechcigl was on the ground floor when the Society started and participated in most SVU Executive Board meetings, as well as in the meetings of the Council and the SVU General Assemblies. He also partook in all SVU Congresses, many of which he also organized and was responsible for its academic programs. Moreover, as the first chairman of SVU Publication Program, he played a pivotal role in shaping the SVU publications’ agenda.

We highly recommend the book to SVU members as well as to all other persons, especially the young people, interested in the Czech and Slovak cultural history.
