ABOUT THE LECTURE:
Sokol Collections of the National Museum of the Czech Republic  The lecture will briefly introduce the collection of the Department of the History of Physical
Education and Sport of the National Museum, with a focus on objects documenting the Sokol
movement in the Czech lands and the USA.
The Department of the History of Physical Education and Sport at the National Museum is currently the oldest institution dedicated to the systematic documentation of physical education and sports associations in the territory of the Czech Republic. It also preserves the memory of individual sports
disciplines, institutions, notable individuals, and the Czech Olympic movement. The Sokol collections which are under the management of the National Museum trace their origins back to Sokol museums and collections that began forming as early as the second half of the 19th century. That is why the objects documenting the history of the Sokol movement form a significant part of this specialized collection of the National Museum. The whole collection includes personal
items and documents of prominent figures of the Sokol movement, such as Miroslav Tyrš, Jindřich Fügner, and many others. In addition, the collection features numerous works of art by significant Czech and Slovak artists who either created their works for Sokol or were inspired by the Sokol movement, including Josef Mánes, Alfons Mucha, and others. The collection also contains many mementos from various Sokol events and festivals (slets), as well as documents from local Sokol organizations. Likewise, the Department of the History of Physical Education and Sport strives to document the activities and history of expatriate physical education organizations abroad. Thanks to that, the collections also include some objects originating from the activities of the Sokol movement in the USA.
