MEDICINE IN COLONIAL AMERICA

Thanks to medical advances in the last 150 years we can hardly imagine the impact of disease on the colonization of America. Infections and epidemics were out of control, ancientbeliefs and superstition prevailed; the transportation and exchange of information were minimal. Blood letting, purgatives, emetics and blistering further increased the rate of mortality in the seriously ill. Wounds usually became infected, amputations were done without anesthesia. In the Revolutionary War moresoldiers died of smallpox and dysentery than battle injuries.

The presentation reviewed the anatomy of the digestive system and the process of digestion. Current imaging techniques of the gastrointestinal tract were demonstrated and several common disoders of the digestive sytem were discussed.
