The Executive Board of the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences extends its condolences and sympathy to the family of Václav Havel and citizens of the Czech Republic in their sorrow over the death of the last President of Czechoslovakia and the first President of the Czech Republic, Mr. Václav Havel.
President Václav Havel, a world-renowned playwright and humanist, will be remembered for his essential contributions to the fall of Communism in Czechoslovakia, its transformation into multi-party democracy and for bringing it into the western world,as well as for his defense of human and civic rights around the world.
